My favourite bit of modern application design is how we cram so much into toolbars that it's difficult to find somewhere to drag windows around the desktop.

Take VS Code. I open it on a 34" monitor, the window is approximate 10x12". The slither of toolbar which works as a drag handle? About 1.5" long, to the side of the search bar. That's it. Absolutely everything else is a poorly-contrasted control of some description.

Hilariously, while Excel and other Microsoft applications have similarly encumbered toolbars, many of their controls do actually work as drag targets. I assume this is the muscle memory which caused me to try to drag VS Code by the search bar, which doesn't work (works in Excel).

@pablolarah @meodai I'm think about the middle element direction. It should rotate imho. :) #ui #ux #design

AI toolmen will tell you that shipping features faster is how good software gets made. But users were *already* drowned under an endless stream of useless features even *before* LLMs.

Rushing to design in code means that you have skipped the step of establishing coherence. Instead of focusing on designing for the browser, start by designing for the user. And for most of us, what the user is there for is the content.

Start designing in content, not in code.

Putting the cart before the horse is not giving you real velocity wins.

The Product Picnic

What if you could predict what users would see — before anything goes live? 👀

With "Short Signals", we're rolling out a fresh +Pluswerk format: short, focused interviews on the technologies that are redefining digital work.

In today's first episode, EyeQuant CEO Kramer Reeves talks about how predictive attention is changing design workflows — making them faster, more data-driven and more confident.

Here at +Pluswerk, we're already using this approach to validate ideas faster, reduce iteration and make more confident decisions. Find out more 👉🏼 https://t1p.de/9mbkj

Kids (teenagers) are using computer-assisted development (Claude and others).

But what they produce is weak from a system design perspective.

Let's teach them about contrast, UI and usability (UX)!

Better now than never.

We’ve focused on explainability—but is that enough?

If you can explain a decision but can’t see how the system behaves over time, can you really trust it?

Maybe the real gap in AI design isn’t reasoning… it’s observability.

AI Observability Is the Missing Layer in Human–Agent Systems » { design@tive } information design

AI explainability isn't enough. Without observability, teams can't understand or trust how agent systems behave at scale.
