Trees can get pretty political. The roots of problems like these in the US often go back decades to right-wing tax cuts. It doesn't even have to happen on the city county level as federal and state cuts can often result in budget shuffling.

But honestly, it's even more complex than that. Causes of public tree decline are many and largely uncovered by media.

@skribe @chrisp Yes. The fines are far too low for the rich, so they just pay the fine.

I think they need to also prosecute the contractors/companies who do the bidding of the rich. Make it so that no crew will take that kind of work on. #UrbanForest

Not too long ago, I was writing about how (rich) people will cut down public trees with impunity. YouTube served me up this 1 month old story. This is not the first time I've read of things like this happening near Seattle.

There was no plant breeding curriculum at community college. There was hardly a plant science curriculum. So I had to find a way, while taking challenging "weeder" classes in chemistry, to learn & get experience.

I remembered the carob (Ceratonia siliqua) street trees I grew up around. Those were specimens I could observe easily, no appointment needed.
