The report never once asks if there's a way to have cycle lanes AND have mature trees. There is, if you want to close that block off to cars and thus not have to widen the road to get a cycle lane in there that preserves driver space.

Right species for the right place is always key. And planting not just for the size of the immature tree, but the size and girth of the mature one.
I feel like if there were more interdisciplinary work between plant physiologists who specialize in tree roots, horticulturalists/arborists, and those who design streets/sidewalks/sewers, we could come up with a gallery design for sidewalks that allowed room to account for mature root size. Knowing how & where to irrigate also matters. #UrbanForest

There *are* solutions, but places dominated by pennywise and pound-foolish thinking tend not to want to invest in them.
The sidewalks need to be smooth for disabled folks & others. If all the homeowners there would be willing to cede some front lawn, the sidewalk could be widened & remade. Or they could ban cars and pedestrianize the street.
The home owner in this posh neighborhood should have consulted with the City a more, if he was concerned about #fire risk. The fire department would have advised him about what less-expensive measures he could have taken to foster Defensible Space. Instead, he shelled out probably $1000s to an #arborist to denude the parcel. Now he'll have combustible ruderal #grass and #shrubs to worry about. #UrbanForest
