Trees can get pretty political. The roots of problems like these in the US often go back decades to right-wing tax cuts. It doesn't even have to happen on the city county level as federal and state cuts can often result in budget shuffling.

But honestly, it's even more complex than that. Causes of public tree decline are many and largely uncovered by media.

Tree Budget Cuts have made Parks, Bikeways Streets and Front yards less safe

By Alan ‘Lorax” Hirsch Tuesday item 7 before council is the first public discussion about the up-to-now hidden part of city structural deficit; the underfunding of tree pruning/sustainability program. This underfunding has not only made our parks, bikeways and streets less safe, but also added to our structural deficit by...

LA's urban forest is declining. If we really want a sustainable city, to keep neighborhoods cool and air clean, we need to reverse this trend. Tree People invites you to help care for our trees. https://treepeople.org/save-our-urban-canopy/ #trees #environment #urbanforest #LACity

A lot of European cities have surprisingly little greenery and a lot of hardscaping. This is a great move and more need to emulate it. #UrbanForest

I think they need to also prosecute the contractors/companies who do the bidding of the rich. Make it so that no crew will take that kind of work on. #UrbanForest

One of the commenters remembers it happening before, too. #UrbanForest #Vandalism #EatTheRich

Not too long ago, I was writing about how (rich) people will cut down public trees with impunity. YouTube served me up this 1 month old story. This is not the first time I've read of things like this happening near Seattle.

There was no plant breeding curriculum at community college. There was hardly a plant science curriculum. So I had to find a way, while taking challenging "weeder" classes in chemistry, to learn & get experience.

I remembered the carob (Ceratonia siliqua) street trees I grew up around. Those were specimens I could observe easily, no appointment needed.

My initial approach was simply to observe & learn as much about carob as possible. https://www.alieward.com/ologies/carobology #Botany #UrbanForest

You might only know carob as not-chocolate, which is a tragedy of its disco-era branding. This tough, gnarly, drought-resistant plant is the real-life Giving Tree, explains passionate Carobologist Megan Lynch. Dripping with leathery banana-shaped legume pods, this tree quietly dots suburban streets
