The home owner in this posh neighborhood should have consulted with the City a more, if he was concerned about #fire risk. The fire department would have advised him about what less-expensive measures he could have taken to foster Defensible Space. Instead, he shelled out probably $1000s to an #arborist to denude the parcel. Now he'll have combustible ruderal #grass and #shrubs to worry about. #UrbanForest

City of St. Catharines, Ont., giving away free trees to help grow urban forest
The city started the program, called Spring Free Tree Giveaway, in order for residents to "help grow our urban forest," according to development horticultural technician Mike Kraft.

Just saw an urban tree PhD project. None of the requirements includes experience with urban trees nor horticulture.

*sad trombone*

This seems to be because they are trying to automate things and make it possible for people less skilled in horticulture to be the decisionmakers and do it all remotely.

#BathME + #Online - #ClimateConversations: Protecting Bath's #UrbanForest From the Impacts of #EmeraldAshBorer

"Bath's stately ash trees are an important part of our urban forest, but they are under dire threat. The emerald ash borer, an exotic pest that rapidly kills native ash trees, has reached Bath after ravaging forests across the northeast. Members of the Bath Community Forestry Committee will explain the biology of emerald ash borer and how they lead to tree mortality, treatment options, and resources the city is employing to protect ash trees. Participants will also learn how the Maine Forest Service is combating the emerald ash borer with the help of predator insects.

Bath Climate Conversations is a continuing series focused on learning, discussing, and connecting around ways to sustain and support our vibrant town as climate change occurs. Hosted by Bath #ClimateAction Commission in partnership with #KennebecEstuaryLandTrust and the #PattenFreeLibrary and presented in person and/or on Zoom. Registration is required for Zoom only."

While this style of horticulture may be thought of as classically USian, I've actually seen it in Europe as well.

It's something that needs to change not just for aesthetic reasons, but for water reasons, for urban heat island reasons, and for environmental reasons... #Horticulture #UrbanForest
