One of the many arguments for a Universal Basic Income is that it might reduce/prevent copper thefts by desperate people.
Copper thefts are incredibly dangerous and wasteful - people stealing $200 worth of copper cause $50,000 worth of damage to railway signals and pedestrian railway crossings.
And there have been cases where only observant pedestrians prevented serious train crashes after copper thefts broke railway signals.
#universalbasicincome would do all that. The cost is roughly 3% the dividends paid by the Insurance industry. That includes everyone, all 8+ billion. We've known this for 50 years. 😔
