Jesko Fezer works as architect, author, designer, artist and exhibition designers. He is professor of Experimental Design at HFBK Hamburg since 2011, a design studio that advocates a community based and cooperative approach to design. Its Public Design Consultancy offers free support to people who are otherwise usually excluded from design processes to help them confront real everyday issues.

Hope ~ Reclaiming the Future
This year’s By Design and by Disaster Conference (DDCON) explores hope not as a passive wish or blind optimism, but as a collective, grounded, and empowering practice. In the face of ecological collapse, social injustice, and political crises, we ask: how can we reclaim the future through design, art, activism, and community?
From 8–10 May 2025 in South Tyrol, we’ll gather for three days of talks, workshops, shared meals, and conversations that nourish a deep sense of connection and purpose. Together, we’ll explore practices and visions that resist despair and open pathways toward solidarity, transformation, and new ways of living.
DDCon25 is an invitation to co-create real utopias—spaces of hope, care, resistance, and renewal. Let’s come together to make hope a lived and shared reality.

Touchless tech: Control fabrics with a wave of your finger - Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, HZDR
A team of researchers from Nottingham Trent University (UK), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy) has created washable and durable magnetic field sensing electronic textiles – thought to be the first of their kind – which they say paves the way to transform use in clothing, as they report in the journal Communications Engineering (DOI: 10.1038/s44172-025-00373-x). This technology will allow users to interact with everyday textiles or specialized clothing by simply pointing their finger above a sensor.
