autism is the ability to think like an alien - feddit.org

ok so when i was 5 years old (actually, this happened at every stage of my life, but just to say, it started early) people have told me that i might as well be an alien (extraterrestrial) posing as a human. that is to say, i think completely different than everyone else and have a completely different worldview. i think that description is very fitting, i don’t like doing things in a way “just because we’ve always done it like this” and because “it’s normal”. and i get the impression that this might be a wider phenomenon among people with autism. (part 2/2 of post, part 1 is here [https://feddit.org/post/31331388])

to find new ideas, we should compare our views with that of aliens - feddit.org

so, if a hypothetical alien species exists, that we can get in contact and communicate with, then we would learn a whole lot of new stuff just by comparing the way we do things with theirs. that is because we often just do things in one way without thinking about whether there’s another way of doing things that might have its own advantages. by comparing our own culture with that of others, we can have a second opinion of how things could be done, which can make us see new chances that we simply never reflected upon. an example: yoga can have unexpected health benefits to some people, due to mindfulness techniques, etc. that are not native to western society at large.

#UnpopularOpinion The movie adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are is the worst movie I have ever seen at the theater.

It would be the worst movie I have ever seen anywhere ever from start to end except that I saw Battlefield: Earth on cable tv once. But at least I didn't actually myself pay to watch it.

Vampires are lame as hell - Lemmy.World

If a story, game, show, or movie contains vampires, I am immediately bored and will suspect the creator of being uncreative. Vampires are not cool. They have never been cool. The are the most overdone “monsters” in any form of media. And they are almost always the same; people with the mannerisms from 1800’s England or France and the dress sense of a 2005 Hot Topic. Why not ancient Babylon? Why not South American vampires? Why are their personalities always the fucking same? Why are they always so fucking formal? Why always the 1800’s; this one bugs me the most because the media often claims that Vampires are thousands of years old, so supposedly they kept up with the times until the 1800’s and then just stopped. It’s because writers who use them are lazy and uncreative. “Oh it’s a metaphor for the duality of man and how there are secretly monsters living among-” shut the fuck up. Use a different metaphor if it’s that important to your story. But it never is. That’s never important to the story because they are always just so fucking lame. Always the same powers. Always the same weaknesses. They have been done to hell and back. Use. A different. Monster.

machine consciousness is just sciousness - feddit.org

ok so this is difficult to explain: the different between consciousness and whatever LLMs are doing is that computers lack the experience that living beings make. the reason why LLMs will never be reliable, i.e. not make grave mistakes, is because they lack a concept of responsibility, i.e. they are careless because there’s nothing on the line for them. they don’t know what it’s like to make a mistake and be wiped out from existence, trained over billions of years to not make these mistakes. meanwhile, living beings do. and that’s the difference.

Can we please all stop the "newcomers to Mastodon should visit this and that site, follow these rules" etc? Social networks evolve. Trying to control the behaviour of newcomers is condescending and counterproductive in my opinion. I don't want the Fediverse to become a walled garden. #UnpopularOpinion, maybe. So be it.
