Awful censorship of a school library in Greater Manchester. Not only are they misguidedly "protecting" teens from Twilight and the Da Vinci Code (alongside many more serious books), they're hounding their librarian with a disciplinary investigation.

I wonder whether the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) realises that the increase in parental complaints is because UK schools are not fit for purpose & parents want better for their children than school leaders are able (or willing?) to provide. The level of blame-shifting onto parents by a broken & dysfunctional education system is disappointing. Nevertheless, school leaders will comtinue to take home massive salaries.

John Harris gives a critical assessment of the Starmer government's white paper on children with special educational needs (SEND), published today. Some positive aspects, many concerns. Good to see his assessment laid out in some detail: he never speaks without reason.

Labour’s Send revolution is a high-stakes experiment. It also threatens precious parental rights

Bridget Phillipson’s 10-year plan is generous in places, but it has its problems. Not least that it could be trashed by a Reform government, says Guardian columnist John Harris

Increasingly worried about my son's secondary school. Not only have they told us that they don't mark books in favour of other methods of in-class "feedback" but they've now told all parents that there will be no support for dyslexic children above what classroom teachers provide in lessons. They announce this saying what they do is in line with EEF guidance.

I’ve been following the latest moves to shorten UK school summer holidays with interest. Even the unions have jumped on the bandwagon of calling for shorter summer holidays.

UK already among the western countries that have the SHORTEST summer holidays (about 42 days). Others have: Canada 56-70, Finland 70, Spain 70-84, Sweden 63-70, USA 70-84.

Children need MORE play time not less. UK tops international charts of children’s unhappiness and dislike of school.

At the same time one of my son’s schools is asking for donations of books and Pritt Sticks because they are hard up, the Harris Federation boss Sir Dan Moynihan’s has a salary that exceeds £500K (the CEO of my son’s MAT earns £300k).

Absolute scandal.

Reminded once again that the education of children is a "long game" and certainly not achieved through quick fixes and "interventions".

As far as I can see there’s been no independent verification that standards (of children’s achievement/attainment) have improved over last 30+ years in UK - and a great deal to suggest going people leave school being less literate, less knowledgeable and less prepared for life. The “standards have improved” declarations by Tories and Labour are just not proven. What have improved are the MASSIVE salaries of CEOs of academies and the size and cost of bureaucracy. #uk #ukeducation #ukschools
