Turkey local elections: Opposition makes huge gains in major upset to Erdogan

Turkey's main opposition party has retained its control over key cities and made huge gains in local elections. Preliminary results reported by state media Sunday showed the opposition mayors of Istanbul and Ankara retaining their seats. Their party was leading in 36 provinces. The vote was seen as a barometer of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s popularity as he sought to win back control of the key urban areas he lost to the opposition five years ago, amid a deep economic downturn and high inflation. The strong showing is likely to help invigorate the opposition after a scathing defeat in last year's presidential and parliamentary elections.

A quick summary of how Turkish economy is going since the #TurkeyElection.

* New finance minister Şimşek is liked by the global folks and shows potential to Turkey leaving Erdoganomics but no one is 100% sure because he's Erdoğan.
* Exchange rates are going wild as expected. USD-TRY went from 19.99 to 22.70 in 10 days. EUR-TRY similarly went from 21.55 to 24.38. Don’t even ask about GBP.
* Markets are on the rise as well. But in a cautious way.

I first visited #Turkey & #Thailand on the same trip, back in '06/'07 - for 🇹🇭, it was a few months after a #Coup.

And at that time, I would never have imagined that it would be Thailand, not Turkey, that would, 15+ years later, be on a path towards becoming more democratic and progressive.

Very (cautiously) hopeful for 🇹🇭, but unbelievably disappointed and worried for 🇹🇷
