The infighting in the opposition that benefits Erdogan
AGI - Conflict intensifies within the Republican People's Party (CHP), the main opposition force to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s power. A generational conflict that, despite elections being scheduled for 2028, ultimately benefits the man who has led Turkey for more than 20 years.
The clash is between the old leader, 1948-born Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, and Secretary Oğuz Ozel, born in 1974. The latter was elected secretary in 2023 and carries a line definitively more energetic and beloved by the base compared to the stubborn Kılıçdaroğlu, repeatedly defeated by Erdoğan.
The Appeal Court Decision
The crisis definitively exploded last Thursday when a Turkish appeals court annulled the 2023 congress, during which leadership passed from the former leader Kılıçdaroğlu to Ozel, then a deputy supported by the deposed and imprisoned Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
Divisions after Presidential Elections
The 2023 convention took place shortly after the defeat in the May presidential elections, already marked by deep internal divisions within the opposition. While Kılıçdaroğlu insisted on his candidacy, the new party current close to İmamoğlu pushed for a candidate capable of beating Erdoğan.
The Defeat and Contested Congress
Ultimately, Kılıçdaroğlu succeeded in imposing himself as a candidate, convinced that the president was at his most politically weak. Kılıçdaroğlu was defeated by Erdoğan in the second round, did not resign, the congress elected Ozel, and the faction close to the elder leader appealed to legal means.
Rejected in first instance, the accusations of procedural irregularities and vote buying, which the CHP strongly rejects, are accepted in appeal on May 21. Thus, the removal of Ozel and his executive committee and the reinstatement of Kılıçdaroğlu and his previous leadership group are ordered.
Police Intervention
The same Kılıçdaroğlu, through his lawyers, were left outside the party headquarters with Ozel barricaded inside, requested the intervention of police forces last Sunday. Images of the raid went around the world.
The Battle for Leadership
Kılıçdaroğlu has already updated his biography on X, defining himself as the current president of the CHP, and has had his photo as current secretary inserted into the main party branches, relegating Ozel to a black and white portrait reserved for former leaders.
The Challenge to the CHP
The CHP itself immediately contested the legitimacy of the ruling, on May 22. Party officials argue that ordinary courts do not have jurisdiction over the matter and that only the Supreme Electoral Council can invalidate party congresses.
Political Reactions
Kılıçdaroğlu’s return occurs at a time when the former leader remains unpopular among opposition voters. The leader of the İyi Party, Musavat Dervisoglu, has openly ruled out the possibility of dialogue with Kılıçdaroğlu in these circumstances.
The court's decision did not provoke mass protests. Only a few thousand people gathered in front of the CHP local branches, while some groups also gathered in Ankara.
Advantages for Erdoğan
Splits and internal problems within the CHP constitute a structural plague that has always favored Erdoğan in the last 20 years, despite the weakening of the AKP and thanks also to the alliance with nationalists from the MHP.
Despite the sudden change in leadership, the two rivals continue to maintain an open line of communication. After the sentence issued on Friday, Kılıçdaroğlu and Ozel had a phone conversation.
The Possible New Congress
According to a former leader’s advisor, Kılıçdaroğlu informed Ozel of his intention to take the party to a new congress at the most opportune moment. However, it is not expected that Kılıçdaroğlu will convene a new congress in the short term.
In Ankara’s political backrooms, rumors are multiplying that the dispute could lead to a permanent split within the CHP, with the possible birth of the “Ekim Partisi” (November Party). Ozel, however, denied this possibility.
Attention is now focused on the ability of the CHP to overcome this internal dispute without definitively compromising the unity of its electoral base, while once again Erdoğan benefits from the infighting within the main opposition party.
