Eastern Nebraska’s bur oak trees, known as the ‘King of the Great Plains,’ dying due to widespread drought
The dieback of bur oak trees in eastern Nebraska became apparent in 2023. By the summer of 2024, dozens of bur oaks were dying, resulting in 70% of the bur oak canopy being lost. Elms, hackberries, ash and red oaks have also succumbed to the harsh conditions.
Bur oak trees are some of the most common native Nebraska trees. They’re hardy trees, known to withstand a range of stresses, including Nebraska’s harshest weather. But they’re dying en masse due to years of devastating drought.

While we're (needfully) obsessing over AI in the world of direct human affairs, there's an explosion of productive exploitation of deep learning in the natural (often anthropogenically-influenced) world.
And these applications need to survive more than an elevator pitch.

#TreeMortality is often neglected in #EarthSystemModels. Global veg models are often very satellite driven leading to detailed #photosynthesis models (dependent on in solar radiation, temperature, and moisture) but less detailed tree death (often just proportional to biomass).
Yu etal 2022 ( https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-29619-4 ) used #MachineLearning to better estimate tree mortality. => Generally reduced expected #LandCarbonStocks.
Here the authors use broad-scale tree mortality data to estimate biomass loss, constraining uncertainty of projected forest net primary productivity in 6 models, finding weaker tropical forest carbon sinks with climate change.
