Researchers at TUM were able to show that each year, 320 million trees worldwide die directly as a result of lightning strikes.

The dieback of bur oak trees in eastern Nebraska became apparent in 2023. By the summer of 2024, dozens of bur oaks were dying, resulting in 70% of the bur oak canopy being lost. Elms, hackberries, ash and red oaks have also succumbed to the harsh conditions.

Here the authors use broad-scale tree mortality data to estimate biomass loss, constraining uncertainty of projected forest net primary productivity in 6 models, finding weaker tropical forest carbon sinks with climate change.
