This fascinating piece of toy history tells us more than just about the post-war era. Here we see a Japanese tin toy car, probably made in the late 1940s or early 1950s. What's special about it? It was crafted from a recycled fish can! On the underside, we can see Japanese characters that point to a fisheries company from Tokyo. This creative reuse of materials not only shows the scarcity of resources after the war but also the ingenuity of the time. A true one-of-a-kind piece with an intriguing story!

Bakelite is an early form of plastic. Popular during the 1920s-1940s, it was used to form many products our grandparents or great-grandparents grew up on. This low-cost synthetic material was used to create toys, including early-model cars. Eventually, Bakelite would be replaced as a significant material in toys, as plastics were needed during WWII. Following the war, other newer and more modern plastics replaced Bakelite in toy construction.
