four Tiny Tiny homes (which meet the Ontario building code and have certified electrics) have been set up on a private property through the Seeds of Hope Foundation in Toronto. it's not a solution to homelessness but it is a decent stepping stone ❤️

"Greg Cook, outreach team lead for Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto, says: 'Ideally, people would be offered housing. Nobody was offered housing. People are just being shoved around the city.'

Cook said the city's winter services plan for people experiencing homelessness is disappointing given the huge need for shelter in Toronto. According to the city's own data, an average of 154 people were turned away from city shelters nightly in October."

cruel as hell — the City of Toronto violently cleared a 15-person unhoused encampment yesterday, at George Hislop Park near Yonge and Bloor, as outdoor overnight temperatures are dipping below freezing 🥶

the shitty City of Toronto awarded the Reverend Canon Maggie Helwig the Toronto Book Award for her book "Encampment: Resistance, Grace, and an Unhoused Community" about an encampment at St. Stephen-In-The-Fields Church, in Toronto’s Kensington Square neighborhood. Then, less than 24 hours later, City workers under police protection violently tore it down, evicting its residents onto the streets 🤬

the City of #Toronto is not doing nearly enough to solve the #HousingEmergency - especially in winter, when living outdoors either rough or in a tent can lead to death, frostbite injury, or other serious health complaints: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-winter-homelessness-plan-2024-2025-won-t-meet-shelter-demand-1.7359367 #TorontoTheCruel #OntarioTheCruel #CanadaTheCruel
Toronto expands winter homelessness plan, but staff say added shelter space still won't meet demand | CBC News

The Winter Services Plan for people experiencing homelessness will add 530 temporary shelter spaces across the city, and offer warming centres during extreme cold temperatures, but staff admit that still won’t be enough to keep everyone inside.

At the start of Friday 18th October 2024, there were 11 unhoused people living in Allan Gardens park. City crews then spent hours clearing the unhoused encampment; they used heavy machinery to destroy structures.

“No one is receiving housing. 7 people have accepted [shitty city] shelter beds. 2 will simply be displaced to nowhere. I can't stress this enough: in no way has homelessness been 'solved' by this action," said advocate Diana Chan McNally. “The narrative of moving people into 'safer, indoor space' is just spin.”

ugh. the city really did clear almost all the unhoused encampment tents from Allan Gardens today that aren't part of the Land Back protest tipis+tents cluster. only one non-LB tent was left standing - the biggest - and, according to a probably believable source, the city workers and cops will be back for that one tomorrow 😞 #Gentrification #HousingEmergency #TorontoTheCruel #Toronto
