City crews clear Toronto encampment as shelters continue to face high demand | CBC News

City crews cleared an encampment in a small downtown park in Toronto on Monday, but one advocate says the timing of the displacement at the start of winter is especially distressing for unhoused people.

"Greg Cook, outreach team lead for Sanctuary Ministries of Toronto, says: 'Ideally, people would be offered housing. Nobody was offered housing. People are just being shoved around the city.'

Cook said the city's winter services plan for people experiencing homelessness is disappointing given the huge need for shelter in Toronto. According to the city's own data, an average of 154 people were turned away from city shelters nightly in October."

@adub Every bloody year. The temperature drops to freezing, so this is the city’s cue to kick the homeless out of their tents. 😡

@adub

Somehow they don"t respect "the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable
rights of all members of the human family" as per the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which Canada signed.

I didn't know it also has a "notwithstanding clause"
