The Tompiro inhabited Abo Pueblo. They were important traders, exchanging valuable salt from the Salinas region for bison products and other goods with Great Plains tribes, and acted as intermediaries between the Plains and Rio Grande Valley peoples. The pueblo structures were built with local red sandstone. The village was abandoned around 1672 due to disease, drought and Apache raids.

San Ysidro & San Buenaventura Missions | Las Humanas, or Gran Quivira, is one of three sites that comprise the Salinas Pueblo Missions NM. Salinas is Spanish for “salt beds,” a reference to the extensive salt deposits east of the pueblo. Salt was more valuable than gold in the ancient world, a critical commodity used to preserve and flavor food - https://newmexiconomad.com/gran-quivera-missions/
