Cloudcroft was founded as a logging camp for the railroad built through Alamogordo, 4500-feet below in the Tularosa Basin. The cooler temperatures in the mountains, and beautiful forests and meadows, made the village a popular destination for people seeking a reprieve from the heat at lower elevations.

The Manuelito Canyon Historic District is a complex of archaeological sites located in and around Manuelito Canyon, about halfway in between Gallup, New Mexico and Lupton, Arizona. Occupied between 700-1350 A.D., the area was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964.

The Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (aka, the VLA) is a premier radio astronomy observatory. The facility has 27 radio antennas arranged in a Y-shape on the Plains of San Agustin, naturally insulated by mountains from signal interference. Operated by the NRAO, they use interferometry to simulate a single giant telescope up to 22 miles across, offering high-resolution imaging of the universe.

The village of Doña Ana was founded in 1843, named after Doña Ana Robledo who died in the area in 1680 while fleeing south with other Spanish settlers during the Pueblo Revolt. It is a well-preserved, traditional 19th-century village north of Las Cruces. The historic Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Catholic church was built in 1844. It is the oldest church in Southern New Mexico.
This is a beautiful, relaxing stroll along the East Fork of the Jemez River, perfect area to look for wildflowers from June - September. The stream flows in a rocky canyon (popular with rock climbers) in a deep conifer forest. The stream meanders through a series of open meadows. The trail goes for about 2 miles before climbing out of the canyon in a series of switchbacks.
