Alo Japan All About Japan
It’s easy to look at the spectacular and messy failure of the #TokugawaShogunate in the wake of literal (steam) gunboat diplomacy but let’s not forget that they managed TWO F*CKING CENTURIES OF PEACE after the chaos of the #SengokuJidai. I think that deserves a fair bit of credit, myself, for what little my opinion is worth. 😄
In other words, requiring daimyos to walk to Edo twice a year in conspicuous display of their loyalty at great expense (to them) served to maintain the #TokugawaShogunate by keeping them too poor to rebel.

The Japan Times
Shinpan (親藩) was a class of #daimyō in the #TokugawaShogunate of #Japan who were certain relatives of the #Shōgun. While all shinpan were relatives of the shōgun, not all relatives of the shōgun were shinpan; an example of this is the #MatsudairaClan of the #OkutonoDomain. Non-daimyō relatives, such as the #Gosankyō, were also known as kamon – thus the shinpan lords were alternatively known as kamon daimyō (家門大名). Shinpan included the #Gosanke.

Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (1646-1709) governed Japan as the fifth shogun of the Edo period (1603-1876). He has often been ridiculed as the 'dog shogun' because of the laws he enacted to protect the lives of animals. Economically, however, the period of his rule was one of prosperity, and culturally, it was one of the most brilliant in Japanese history.
