TikTok is closing their publishing program | - Good e-Reader

TikTok announced that its publishing program for authors, called 8th Note Press, will be closing. This comes four months after their official launch. Hundreds of authors who wanted to take advantage of the #booktok program are trying to reclaim their rights. 8th Note Press was supposed to capitalize on #BookTok by publishing works targeted toward Millennials and Gen Zers, and then use its integration with TikTok under their common owner ByteDance’s umbrella to market the books.“8th Note Press does not seem to have benefited from proximity to its sister business,” reported The Bookseller. “8th Note Press did not have a TikTok shop and does not seem to have promoted authors organically, only posting one video and using paid-for advertising on the platform.” Authors reported poor communication and a lack of support, revealing ByteDance’s inexperience in the traditional publishing industry. The retreat highlights the limitations of tech platforms expanding into legacy industries without deep subject-matter expertise or hiring the right people with extensive publishing experience.
