Famously a flop on its original release. Not in my case though - I was there day one. Rightly regarded now as one of the greatest films ever made.

AKA The Professional. Really enjoyed this at the time. Hasn't aged well though — for a number of well-documented reasons. Stylish as anything, mind.

Hadn't read the books, so what I remember isn't the film — it's the uproar over Tom Cruise as Lestat. Even Anne Rice hated the casting… until she saw it.

Quite the contrast with yesterday's Shallow Grave. One team went off to reinvent British cinema; Emmerich used this to launch years of high-concept nonsense — Independence Day, Godzilla, the lot. Still good fun though.
The first of many Danny Boyles to grace Admit One Daily, and what a debut. Two years before Trainspotting, the same team made an Edinburgh flat-share, a dead lodger and a suitcase of cash look this cool. British film waking up. An absolute cracker.
One of my favourite movies. This was a theatrical run of the 1994 restoration. Cecil Beaton’s sets and costumes never looked so good.
We’ve had Coppola’s Dracula, Sir Ken Branagh’s Frankenstein and now Jack Nicholson’s Wolf. The 90s truly were a decade where super talented filmmakers and actors made lavish, slightly overblown monster films. Some better than others. Leave it to the pros, lads.
The film people only seem to remember for Quentin Tarantino’s cameo, in which he expounds on the homoerotic subtext of Top Gun.
In which our Ken gets the opportunity to direct a big budget Hollywood movie with Bobby De Niro, with disappointingly middling results.

I think I’ve mentioned previously that I’m not really a fan of Jim Carrey in full mad zany mode. Pretty sure I mainly went to see this one for the VFX, which at the time were stunning.
