Torres Strait Islanders commemorate the legacy of 1936 pearl industry maritime strike

Fed up with restrictions over what they earned and where they could go, pearl boat workers embarked on nine months of industrial action that would change the face of their communities forever. Ninety years on, their legacy is still felt across the Torres Strait.

I was lucky enough to visit #ThursdayIsland this year. So great to see the locals raising funds to bring more bicycles and get more people cycling. Almost everything is within easy reach of a short bike ride.🏝️🚴

The flag was designed by the late Bernard Namok of #ThursdayIsland.

The flag is emblazoned with a white Dhari (headdress) which is a symbol of Torres Strait Islanders. The white five pointed star beneath it symbolises peace, the five major island groups.

The green stripes represent the land, the black stripes represent the people, and the blue the sea.
