According to Japanese artist Genpei Akasegawa, a Thomasson is an architectural feature or structure that, despite remaining useless, is still maintained as part of the building.

This type of Thomasson, known as Muyō mon (無用門) is a useless doorway that has been blocked up at some unknown time in the past, yet retains its form as a doorway.

Braubach.

Came across this #thomasson while in Baltimore. Not only are they maintaining these steps and the awning over them to a door that no longer exists but they are actively preventing people from using the steps to sit on. https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/thomassons/

Cities, like living things, evolve slowly over time. Buildings and structures get added and renovated and removed, and in this process, bits and pieces that get left behind. Vestiges.  Just as humans have tailbones and whales have pelvic bones, cities have doors that open into a limb-breaking drop, segments of fences that anyone can walk around, and pipes
