La notizia – riportata da The Hill – è una cocente sconfitta per il Presidente Trump che aveva sfruttato il tentato omicidio al gala dei media a Washington per sostenere le ragioni di una “ball room”. In quell’occasione Trump aveva parlato di sicurezza nazionale: il piano sarebbe stato infatti dotare la sala di vetri blindati e di un bunker. I repubblicani avevano poi provato a inserire il progetto nella legge di spesa per la sicurezza da 1 miliardo di dollari.
Ma la senatrice MacDonough, una figura super partes responsabile di questo tipo di decisioni dal 2012, si è pronunciata contro l’utilizzo dei finanziamenti – destinati al Secret Service ed altre agenzie del dipartimento della sicurezza – per la realizzazione del salone . “I repubblicani hanno cercato di far pagare ai contribuenti il conto della sala da ballo da un miliardo di dollari di Trump. I democratici al Senato hanno reagito con forza, mandando a monte il loro primo tentativo – ha scritto su X il leader della minoranza democratica Chuck Schumer – gli americani non vogliono una sala da ballo. Non ne hanno bisogno. E di certo non dovrebbero essere costretti a pagarne una”.
