When Being Unseen Becomes Being Obsolete

Inspired by The Twilight Zone episodes “The Obsolete Man” and “To See the Invisible Man,” this reflective essay explores social invisibility, human dignity, and the quiet ways people begin to disappear emotionally and psychologically. The piece examines how modern culture rewards attention and outrage while often overlooking ordinary human beings, and how repeated silence, rejection, and exhaustion can lead people to gradually make themselves smaller. At its core, the essay asks what happens when being unseen slowly becomes feeling obsolete.

I live in an urban center and our librarians literally save lives by having naloxone available and providing a resources for homeless people and those looking for job training. Things that AI could never replace. So yeah, librarians are not obsolete.

Sadly Librarians in 2025 and 2026 are similarly vilified.
