UT Dallas Punishes Editor, Restricts Free Speech

The university has taken a ridiculous turn: investigating and proposing punishments against Gutierrez for simply editing a letter to the editor. Yes, you read that right, and if it weren’t so chilling, it would be farcical.

After a yearlong investigation, UT Dallas characterized Gutierrez’s editing as “discriminatory harassment.”

I gave up on reading Dinosaur Terry McCrann's "financial" column in our local Murdoch fish wrapper (The Mercury) a long time ago. There's a bit of a pile on in the letters page for him at the moment so I sent in a recycled one they didn't publish a few months ago. Note there were two letters of the same vein in there today.

Rather pleasantly surprised to see that one of the people who boosted my posts about #TheMercury is @Jyoti, whose hit "Your Woman" I played regularly back in my club DJing days. Small world.

Thanks for the boost and the music, Jyoti! I remember years ago reading an interview somewhere where you discussed how difficult it was to convince your software to introduce minor errors and time shifts so that the songs on the White Town album weren't _too_ perfect. I was fascinated by the work taken to give digital music an analog feel, and that's stuck with me all these years later.

Nice to virtually cross paths!

Another update: Some more info on the work #TheMercury did with their #HVAC system, sent to me by the club's manager.

In addition to increasing the airflow through the club (which is essentially what the #CO2 monitor measures), the air going through the system also goes through filters rated MERV 13 or better, in-duct air ionizers, and then passes over in-duct UVC lights for sterilization. Restrooms are vented directly outside, instead of being cycled back into the club's primary ventilation.

They've done a _lot_ of work to keep the club and the community as safe as possible, and should absolutely be recognized for that.

And as a friendly reminder: The Mercury is an all-volunteer business, so when you come out, be sure to tip! The staff (including doorpeople, coat check, bartenders, and DJs) put a lot of their time and effort into the space; show your appreciation as you can!
