Llanelli Tesco customer helps Halfway Primary School secure £5,000 Golden Grant

Golden token lucky dip at Llanelli Extra

Shoppers at Tesco Llanelli Extra were invited to take part in a special in‑store event on Saturday, 6 September, where one customer discovered a golden version of the supermarket’s famous blue voting token.

The winner was able to choose which of three local schools would receive a £5,000 Golden Grant as part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts programme — and selected Halfway Primary School.

Funding boost for pupils

Deputy Headteacher Rhodri Jones said the grant would make a real difference to pupils:

“We’re so thankful to Tesco and all their customers for choosing us for this generous grant. We’re lucky to be part of such a caring and supportive community here at Halfway Primary School, and this funding will make a real difference to our children’s learning.”

Community support recognised

Store Manager Paul Sherman said the event was a chance to highlight Tesco’s role in supporting local schools and charities:

“The customer who found the golden token was so pleased to award Halfway Primary School the £5,000 grant. Thank you to all our customers who took part in the draw and congratulations to Halfway Primary School.”

Part of a UK‑wide programme

The Llanelli store was one of 107 Tesco branches across the UK chosen to take part in the Golden Grants event, with more than £500,000 awarded to schools nationwide.

Since launching in 2016, Tesco’s grants programme has provided over £120 million to more than 67,000 schools and community groups.

Claire De Silva, Head of Communities at Tesco, said:

“We are incredibly proud to award Golden Grants to over one hundred schools, supporting the vital work they do for our children and communities.”
