AI Bans Are Here. I Told You So. Now Let’s Talk About Why This Is Bad.

I said it before. I said it on this very blog, on Interfaith Intrepid, back when folks were still treating artificial intelligence like it was some kind of science fiction novelty that only tech bros in San Francisco cared about. I said that the AI bans were coming, and I said that they were not going to look the way people thought they were going to look. They were not going to be principled stands against corporate overreach or thoughtful regulatory frameworks designed to protect everyday […]

If someone is so vulnerable that an AI could talk them into suicide, they need to be under psychiatric observation in a hospital. They are experiencing a severe mental health episode, otherwise they wouldn't consider ChatGPT a valid reason to die.

"No more AI" isn't treatment.

We need to stop discussing this as if sufferers are incapable of navigating our own mental illness safely, or that we lack any ability to ground ourselves in reality.

I've come to the conclusion that on balance the best way to deal with the 'problem' of artificial intelligence is to just say 'no'.

Sure there are many focussed applications that will pay local/sectoral dividends, but the widespread use fo AI seems to me (at least) to be creating more difficulties than it solves....

Call me a technophobe, but sometimes new technologies actually should not be part of our future!

ChatGPT fear reminds me of the Wikipedia fear/skepticism when people started using that resource. The thought was "anybody can edit it, who knows if it's accurate". Now it is probably one of the most valuable information repositories in human history.

You know, people freak out about AI replacing human beings because they can perform tasks better. That is sort of like thinking that cameras would replace human painters when cameras were first invented.

Like cameras, you still need a human being to operate an AI. There is also always going to be an appetite for non-AI products, just as there is still an appetite for painting despite the existence of camera technology.

I'm looking forward to the day that teacher resistance to #edtech (now AI) won't be pitched as #technophobia but an act of resistance to collective ignorance as to how these technologies are painted as essential for learning in the first place.
