New blog post: Ride report: Ontario, OR

I got off to a reasonably early start after sleeping like the dead. The weather was cloudy and cool, which was a nice change from the day before.

The first part of the day was riding along a dam reservoir on the Snake River. That was flat at least. Kind to my knees and easy for me to manage with my reduced power, although just the climb out of the river valley, starting a

The big push into Baker City took a lot out of me.

I was staying at the Churchill School bike hostel, and rolled out late because I did laundry there. I stopped in town for breakfast and discovered how fried my appetite has gotten. I was being hungry. I was at a nice restaurant having food I liked. And I still had to force myself to finish it. I don't understand.

New blog post: Packed and ready

Take to the Sky, ready to go

Apart from a handful of small items I’ll need between now and tomorrow morning, my bike is ready for the Trans Am Bike Race.

My self, that’s another matter.

I have a bunch of small bike-maintenance tasks to get ready for the #TABR. Today I replaced the brake pads; with disc brakes, new pads come with a new retaining bolt. I decided to use the new bolt instead of reuse the existing one. The new one had (note past tense) a 2.5-mm hex head, and I immediately cammed it out. Couldn’t remove it. I was disproportionately upset about this.

I wanted a bike shop to give it a once-over anyhow to see if I was missing anything, so I’m letting them fix it.

Today’s ride. I’ve been pushing myself lately, trying to drive up my CTL, and have just been exhausted. I had another century planned for today, but decided I am at risk of overdoing it and throttled it way back.

The wind was treacherously strong today, which made this a tougher ride, physically and mentally, than the numbers suggest.

I put new pedals (SPDs instead of Speedplays) and tires on the bike yesterday to give them some shakedown time before the #TABR. Apart from a good cleaning, chain dip, and all my bags, this is how the bike will look at the starting line.
