So, this article mentions putting ice cubes in front of a fan -- which is what is called a #SwampCooler. Swamp coolers work if the air is dry, but if it is humid, it won't work...

Looking into a #SwampCooler unit for cooling this summer. It doesn't dehumidify the air, but we already have a dehumidifier. Has anyone had experience using a commercial swamp cooler?

Edit: Yeah, I guess it won't work where we are. Too humid, and to use the dehumidifier at the same time would just undo what the swamp cooler is doing. Looking into a portable a/c unit instead.

A few years ago I threw this swamp cooler together but by the time I had it done it wasn’t hot enough to need it. As the mercury climbed today I took it down and … it works! Great for spot cooling while puttering in the garage. Pump and fan together pull about 9 watts. #SwampCooler.

@dalias @Lyle I don’t think that this is true in much of the West or anywhere that a #SwampCooler will work. To some degree, I think that the uniformity of both wasteful thermostat settings and archaic dress codes is driven by executive practices set by men stationed in New York and DC.

Blower shaft of my swamp cooler has taken a beating. Was grinding through the bearings which caused the groove. Overhauled! New bearings , blower shaft, belt . Way overdue 🤪

We are not helpless against extreme heat.
Acting to counter climate change is the most important defense.

But places are also acting to make the heat more survivable in the meantime - planting more trees, which cool directly and provide more shade, providing shade via structures, and checking on vulnerable seniors. Also treating heat like other natural disasters.
