I read The Great Gatsby for the first time when I was very young and didn't remember the detailed descriptions of the lives of the rich, or even the references to white supremacy. As I started to get annoyed (because I have to reread the book), I decided to read another book alternately, one that I read when I was a child, which I also don't remember very well, but which left me with an impression of healthy kindness and camaraderie - #SwallowsandAmazons by #ArthurRansome.

I downloaded the book for free from Anna's Archive and was amazed at the quantity and variety of books Ransome wrote.

Note: Apparently, the book has only entered the public domain in the US, but in the UK (and other European countries) it is still under copyright.

@andrewplord @adaddinsane Here’s an obscure fact about Eddison; his best friend as a boy was Arthur Ransome, who went on to write ‘Swallows and Amazons’. Safe to say they went in rather different literary directions.

There’s a lot of me in Jerya, or a lot of her in me, but she would be bamboozled by a lot of the cultural references in much of what I read/watch. I’d start her with ‘Swallows and Amazons’ and be on hand to explain things like what duffers are. And take it from there.

Avid reader from a very early age, but there’s no clearer memory than being given a copy of Swallows and Amazons to stop me dying of boredom at a wedding wen I was about nine. Imagination, adventure, and a vivid female lead; a setting that was both familiar and exotic; and as I saw later, writing that was crisp and clear.
