Meta’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, emailed roughly 78 000 employees on May 20 to announce the company’s latest round of layoffs, which will affect about 8 000 staff (≈10 % of the workforce) and eliminate around 6 000 open positions. In the memo he thanked those departing, promised that there will be no further company‑wide layoffs this year, and admitted that Meta’s internal communication had been poor and must improve. Affected U.S. workers will receive 16 weeks of severance plus two weeks per year of service and 18 months of COBRA health coverage, while 7 000 employees are being reassigned to new AI projects as Meta ramps up a $125‑$145 billion AI spend. The cuts have left morale low, with employees filing petitions against invasive monitoring for AI training, posting “salad” emojis as a covert salute, and creating internal “draft” teams that absorb about 2 000 staff under the new Applied AI and Engineering unit. Zuckerberg closed the note by emphasizing AI’s importance and the uncertainty ahead, while the promises of stability and better communication aim to reassure the remaining 70 000 workers.

Meta is reorganizing its workforce by moving roughly 7,000 employees into new artificial‑intelligence‑focused roles and consolidating them into four new units, while simultaneously cutting about 10 % of its staff—approximately 8,000 jobs—and leaving roughly 6,000 open positions unfilled. The shift, announced in an internal memo and expected to be detailed on Wednesday, is presented as a move to run the company more efficiently and to fund its growing AI investments across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other businesses. Meta’s CFO noted that AI tools are already boosting engineering productivity, but the changes come amid a broader trend of Silicon‑Valley firms betting on AI, and they have coincided with a near‑9 % drop in Meta’s stock this year and cautious analyst commentary about the sustainability of the AI‑spending cycle.

Meta will cut roughly 8,000 jobs—about 10 % of its roughly 78,000‑strong workforce—on May 20, notifying North‑American staff via 4 a.m. emails in three regional waves and moving about 7,000 remaining employees into four new AI‑focused organisations with flatter, manager‑light structures. Laid‑off U.S. workers will receive 16 weeks of base pay plus two extra weeks per year of service, along with healthcare and career support, while non‑U.S. staff will get comparable packages on local schedules. The layoffs accompany a broader shift of capital spending toward AI data centres, custom silicon and model training, and a reduction of 6,000 open hiring roles, reflecting Meta’s push to embed AI throughout the company. Internal morale has sharply declined, with employee ratings falling dramatically, and the company has signalled that additional rounds of cuts could follow later in the year as it reshapes its workforce around AI.

A leaked internal memo from HR chief Janelle Gale, first reported by Reuters, lays out the mechanics: emails will land at 4 AM local time across three regional waves, and around 7,000 employees who keep their jobs will be shifted into four new AI-focused organisations.

US Top News and Analysis | Meta layoffs starting this week stress harsh AI reality inside Zuckerberg’s company

Meta is preparing its latest round of layoffs, cutting about 8,000 jobs—roughly 10% of its workforce—while scrapping plans to fill 6,000 open roles, and further cuts are expected later in the year. The reductions come as the company dramatically increases its AI spending, boosting its 2026 capital‑expenditure guidance by up to $10 billion to as much as $145 billion, and launching new AI initiatives such as an employee‑tracking tool for training digital agents. Employees report growing dread and a steep drop in internal ratings, citing morale issues, privacy concerns over data‑tracking, and skepticism about Meta’s scattered AI strategy. The layoffs follow earlier cuts in Reality Labs and other units, and come amid a broader tech‑industry wave of layoffs driven by AI‑related restructuring.

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

Meta announced it will cut about 8,000 jobs on May 20, 2026, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg restructures the company around smaller, AI‑powered teams that can deliver the output previously achieved by larger groups. CFO Susan Li said the record $125‑$145 billion capital‑expenditure on data‑centers, custom chips and model training forces a tighter headcount, and she admitted the firm no longer has a clear picture of its “ideal” size in an era where AI tools enable one or two engineers to ship in a week what once required dozens of people for months. Zuckerberg emphasized that the cuts are about fitting the workforce into the next version of Meta rather than pure cost‑saving, insisting AI will amplify rather than replace workers. The move has sparked low internal morale, with reports of “ultraflat” structures, performance tracking via an internal Model Capability Initiative, and a 6 % drop in Meta’s stock after the earnings call.

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a forthcoming 10 percent workforce reduction—about 8,000 jobs—while the company redirects spending toward artificial‑intelligence initiatives. In the first‑quarter earnings call he said smaller, faster teams can achieve in a week what once required dozens of months, and that Meta will “streamline our teams” as it pursues artificial general intelligence. Meta raised its 2026 capital‑expenditure outlook to $125‑$145 billion to fund its Meta Superintelligence Labs and aggressive AI‑talent hiring, driving a 35 percent jump in quarterly expenses. Despite beating revenue expectations—$56.3 billion, up 33 percent year over year—shares fell as daily‑active‑user growth missed forecasts. The cuts mirror a broader tech‑industry shift, with companies such as Block, Snap and Microsoft also trimming staff to prioritize AI‑driven efficiencies.

–sn–
