There is a virtual mountain of research about SEIs and, yes, if you want a few dozen studies showing SEI scores correlate with some estimate of student learning or course quality you'll find them. However, like all science the best information about a phenomenon is not found by simply taking the average of the empirical research. Any reasonable, critical-thinking dive into the research (stretching back half a century) will show that studies with better methodology show no association between SEI scores and the things they claim to measure.
