trying to be perceived as a normal, friendly person by nodding and smiling as an old man passes me on the sidewalk while I'm hunched over someone's bushes next to their green bin extremely suspiciously, taking photos of flies having sex

#FridayFlyday: just encountered this gorgeous metallic bronze-green-blue soldier fly (family Stratiomyidae) in the garden! It was very placid and let me get lots of photos.

Das ist vermutlich die #Waffenfliege Odontomyia flavissima. #Waffenfliegen sind an ihren spitzen Dornen am Ende ihres Brustbereichs erkennbar. Diese hat sehr hübsche Augen.

Friday Flyday!
Here's an insect I'd never seen before: Berkshiria albistylum. A tiny, poorly-known soldier fly. Hanging out in the yard just minding her own business.

Just look at this odd little fly. Nemotelus kansensis (Stratiomyidae), photographed yesterday in Texas hill country.
Ok - completely stuck and feeling stupid. What is this #insect that came to light in the Ikara-Flinders National Park two weeks ago?
Massive eyes and pathetically feeble legs remind me of #Stratiomyidae #Chiromyzinae, and the antennae kind of fit.
But the shapes of the head and thorax point away from #Diptera.
The horny patches at the base of the wings (I don't think they're elytra) remind me of something I can't place.
There's a lovely #weevil in the shots too.
Friday Flyday! I do a double-take every time I see these. Hoplitomyia mutabilis soldier flies are excellent mimics of Mexican honey wasps.
