Butcher's broom seen 22/3 nr Goring, Oxon. The name is said to derive from its use by butchers to scour their blocks & stalls. The plant was also used to deter mice from gnawing raw meat, the prickly stems making an impenetrable hedge around the flesh.#storyplants #wildflowerhour
First cowslips of the year, seen yesterday at Streatley (W. Berks). An old traditional name is 'keyflowers'. In Norse mythology the plant was dedicated to Odin’s wife, Freya, & symbolised the keys to that goddess’s treasure palace. #storyplants #wildflowerhour
The Blackthorn is now in bloom. Regarded as the sister of Hawthorn, the two woven together are considered especially magical, representing darkness and light. Garlands of Blackthorn and Hawthorn are often used to top maypoles as a symbol of fertility.
