Today I learned that the Steam Controller does not actually have a speaker in it, the startup and shutdown chimes are produced by the haptic motors in the touchpads.
I learned this because the Steam Deck (OLED) makes a very quiet, three rising tone startup noise before the SteamOS Doonk when the screen turns on and that is apparently some startup thing the haptic motors in the touchpads do.
I’ve also been playing this and Quake 4 with that thing https://mastodon.online/@alsorew/114422055325109665 Hellgate is perfect for it since you barely need to aim.
I like it for what it is, which is on the tin, to the point that I don’t know what to add.
Couple of tricks:
– You can assign the gyro to the touchpad touch, which was the default behavior of the #SteamController.
– The whole device is so light that it makes sense to use it one-handed, maybe with a gyro or an actual mouse.
