Dec. 8, 1941: On this in day infamy, there was no secession, or formation of “The State of Jefferson”. The State of Jefferson?
In the 1940s, several counties in northern #California and southern #Oregon, decided to succeed from thier respective States rule. Some call it a publicity stunt, prompted by the unhappiness of residents of the area. Feeling ignored by #Sacramento and Salem in regard to policy and funding, a new “State of Jefferson” was born, almost.
Gilbert Gable, former Mayor Port Oxford OR, was one of the leaders of the movement. He argued that: Jackson, Curry, Josephine and Klamath counties, should unite with counties in California, and #succeed from Oregon. The northern California counties were Siskiyou, Modoc and Del Norte. There was even a torchlit parade in #Yreka, and an inauguration for the first “Governor of The State of Jefferson”, John Leon Childs. When ever there’s a parade, you know it’s got to be official.
On November 27, 1941, a number of residents made headlines after setting up armed road blocks on US99, near Yreka, CA. They Stopped drivers giving them a “Proclamation of Independence” stating that, “Jefferson” was in “patriotic rebellion against” the two states. They also advised that the “rebellion” would continue with succession, “every Thursday until further notice”
The #succession effort ended quickly with the Dec. 2. death of Mayor Gable and the attack on Pearl Harbor, 71 years ago, yesterday.
In 1971, there was a short-lived resurgence of support for the movement and in 1989, “Jefferson Public Radio” was named in commemoration of the “rebellion”. The “State of Jefferson” is still a part of the culture and #folklore of the region. So, Happy Birthday to the “State of Jefferson”, kind of.
