#SF #SpeedCams

#KTVU2 news often runs a "Question of the Day" poll on various topics that they report on when they're on the air.

Today's poll was -- Yes or No:

**WILL SPEED CAMERAS CHANGE YOUR DRIVING HABITS?**

The result were 64% NO & 36% YES.

The problem with this poll is that the talking heads on the show were assuming that "Yes" meant that the respondent would drive slower to avoid getting a citation for driving 10+ miles over the speed limit.

However, they failed to realize that there are other ways the cams might change one's "driving habits."

In my case, the cams won't change the speed that I drive but they will change the way that I drive by changing the routes I drive in The City..

I will try to avoid driving where the cams are located whenever possible & I suspect other drivers will do the same. 🤷‍♂️

@mattmangels That's why the #SpeedCams in #SF are going to be ineffective.

All of the locations are known & anyone who wants to can easily avoid them or speed up after they pass them. 🤷‍♂️

Tracy Rosenberg, the advocacy director for Oakland Privacy, told The San Francisco Chronicle that there was a long history of speeding enforcement programs “disproportionately impacting lower-income communities of color.” “And that is largely because of a long, long history of traffic infrastructure that has brought certain traffic-calming features and amenities to more affluent neighborhoods, and not so much to less affluent neighborhoods,” Rosenberg said. #speedcams https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/15/us/california-traffic-speed-cameras.html
California Roads Could Soon Have Cameras Issuing Speeding Tickets

A bill moving through the Legislature would allow cameras in six cities to issue automatic fines for vehicles driving at least 11 miles an hour over the limit.
