Memphis Horns by Memphis Horns, released on Cotillion in 1970.

Review by John Bush

The first chance for the Memphis Horns to step to the front of the studio, their 1970 debut album was a collection of simmering grooves and brassy horns. Though they weren't as crucial on their own as the competition (Booker T. & the MG's and the Dixie Flyers, the latter with several members featured here as well), the group really impresses on Memphis standards like Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" and "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)," the Box Tops' "Cry Like a Baby," and a torrid one-two punch: the Sam & Dave medley "You Don't Know (Like I Know)" and "Soul Man."

And Now! is the third studio album by the Southern soul band Booker T. & the M.G.'s, released in November 1966. It is notable as the first M.G.'s album featuring bassist Duck Dunn on every track. - Wikipedia

The coolest soul backup band in the world, led by organist Booker T. Jones, grooves its way through 12 instrumental cuts, including "Sweet Potato," "Working in the Coal Mine," and "In the Midnight Hour."

Started today with a 24 song, jampacked but really strong record by James Carr from the 60s and YTM randomly recommended me a record by William Bell released the same year (1967) that I am now digging on. A soulful start to the weekend.

Today's #FortnightFridayMusic theme is #green. Here's one of my favorites, by a great but very much underappreciated vocalist:

There'a a good overview of Washington's career at John Ridley's website: https://www.sirshambling.com/articles/ella_washington/index.php

Arthur Alexander is the second studio album by Arthur Alexander, released in 1972.

Review by Mark Deming

...Alexander been out of the public eye for a few years when he scored a deal with Warner Brothers and cut a self-titled album in 1972. Alexander had great faith in the project, which was produced by Tommy Cogbill and featured the cream of the Muscle Shoals studio players, along with songwriting contributions from Dan Penn, Donnie Fritts, and Alexander himself. Sadly, the album flopped in the marketplace, but a listen to the results confirms this was the fault of the promotion men, not the artists; hitting a mid-point between deep Southern soul and country-leaning funk,
