Growing up, I spent many hours on this observation deck overlooking the MacArthur Lock at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. There is a 21 foot difference in water levels between Lake Superior & Lake Huron. The locks are 100% gravity-fed and require no pumps. The largest lock (Poe) needs 22 million gallons of water to lift or lower a boat!

The Soo Locks are a way for ships to travel to and from Lake Superior to Lake Huron and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Years ago, we had the opportunity to watch a lake freighter go through the Soo Locks just after sunrise. It was exciting to see such a huge ship close up!
