Je repense à Delicious (del.icio.us), le site de social bookmarking qui permettait de sauvegarder des liens en leur appliquant des mots-clés (tags). Il est apparu à une époque où le dossier de favoris des navigateurs ne semblait plus en mesure de répondre aux besoins d'internautes connectés 24h / 24.

Le service était financé par des fonds d'investissements et des gens comme Marc Andreessen (qui fondera plus tard Andreessen Horowitz). Dès 2005, Delicious a été racheté par Yahoo, qui voulait rester dans le coup à l'ère du web 2.0 et avait déjà fait l'acquisition de Flickr. Ça allait forcément mal finir.

L'équipe de développeurs a quitté Yahoo après quelques années. Par la suite, le service n'a pas arrêté de changer de main, comme un ballon de rugby durant une action offensive, avant de disparaître aux alentours de 2017-18. S'il avait été financé par ses utilisateurs, à la Wikipédia, il existerait peut-être encore.

Strange thing about #Pocket shutdown is that now a lot of people are suggesting like five bazillion other #socialbookmarking services.

...I've had accounts on a few social bookmarking services. *All* of them died for various reasons. (Any Delicious users still around? Anyone remember Magnolia?)

(There are people saying that it sucks that Pocket export doesn't have the article contents. Yeah, it sure does, but at least you *get* an export of the data in some capacity. Not all services I've used were that lucky. Some just straight up blew up one day. Magnolia was "eep, our database got screwed. We have no backups. That's that, then, I guess.")

I just signed up for #RaindropIO, and made damn sure they have an actual backup option.
