Hmmm, now I kinda wanna make some pride-themed #bookbind-y stuff.

(Super late, I know.)

Maybe #smolbooks?

Never posted results, did I?

So, I'm thinking about what I wanna do for Binderary, the "Bind a bunch of Books in February" thing, and I think I've found my personal set of ... well, lets not call it rules, call it goals:

1. Bind as many books as you can, but don't beat yourself up about it.

2. Binding has to happen in February, but preparation (preprint, printing, cutting, folding) in advance is ok.

3. Functional > Fancy, unless I feel like fancy, in which case fancy is fine, too.

4. "Books I can see myself using" > "Books I can see myself gifting" > "Books I wanna have on the shelf" > "Book I could maybe sell? Dunno."

5. Monday-Thursday: Making the Textblocks, Friday: Heading to the anarchist print room and cutting the text blocks, Saturday-Sunday: Making covers/Casing in

6. I wanna try new and different methods of binding, if possible with my materials and tools. But, again, no stress if it doesn't work.

7. #smolbooks are books, too.

(Also, started printing and folding the first book: "Wushu: Black Belt Edition", by Daniel Bayn, one of the early indie rpgs that I was really into in the 2000s-2010s. Make a cute, chunky little A6 book.)

Because 🍪 asked and I didn't know, I looked it up and turns out that my other #smolbooks were kinda B11-sized, so also kinda ISO 216 compliant.

But, I mean, B-series... 😏

Next set of #smolbooks will be sized according to ISO 216, as all things paper should be.

Aaaaanyway, what I'm taking away from my dive in the Etsy #smolbooks ecosystem:

1. There are a few people selling smolbooks, but they don't do them like I do. (Some do them fancier, tho.)

2. Outside of some outliers in either direction, the typical smolbook tends to fall somewhere between 5€ and 15€, which is also what I would consider a fair price.

3. Some of these outliers make me confused and sad, either "I don't understand how they can charge so much" or "I don't understand how they can charge so little".

4. I want a tiny wooden 1:7 scale miniature bookshelf I can put my smolbooks onto. 😭

Some of the actual physical #smolbooks were very tempting, tho.

One shop has these 3x4cm, two signature long-stitch leather-cover books that look really nice.

Decided on a whim to see what people on etsy charge for #smolbooks similar to mine.

(As expected, the prices are all over the place and sometimes completely bonkers.)

What I did not expect was the sizable number of offers that are just ... downscaled bestseller bookcovers, as digital files, for people to print out and stock their dollhouse/miniature dioramas with.

O_o

Amazing.

The Renegade Bindery fanbinding discord is doing "Binderary", ie. "Lets bind various amounts of books in february, together, as an event."

Kinda tempted to join but unsure what to bind.

I'm not a fanfic person but I could just do a bunch of #smolbooks? Maybe try and do them in different binding/sewing/cover styles?

Or maybe I'll bind some of my favorite CreativeCommons stuff?

Hmhmhm...
