Houston waived more than 230 sidewalk construction requirements since rule change in September

Last fall, Mayor John Whitmire instructed the city’s planning department to use discretion in waiving sidewalk construction requirements. According to records obtained by Houston Public Media, about 6% of single-family projects since then received waivers.

Houston City Council delays ordinance that would remove sidewalk requirement

Three City Council members were pushing for an ordinance that would remove the requirement that developers build sidewalks or pay a fee for new construction. It’s intended to address the “sidewalk to nowhere” issue.
