Houston waived more than 230 sidewalk construction requirements since rule change in September

Last fall, Mayor John Whitmire instructed the city’s planning department to use discretion in waiving sidewalk construction requirements. According to records obtained by Houston Public Media, about 6% of single-family projects since then received waivers.

The target areas are along the parts of Aldine Drive, Bissonnet Street, Jensen Drive, and Tidwell Road, which the city has identified as part of its high injury network.
