WhatsApp announced a new “Incognito Chat” feature that lets users converse with Meta’s AI chatbot while keeping the content hidden even from Meta itself, thanks to the platform’s Private Processing scheme and Trusted Execution Environments that enforce end‑to‑end encryption and prevent the provider from accessing messages. The AI interactions are text‑only for now, ephemeral by default, and can be turned off to allow anonymized web searches; future updates may add image and voice support and an option to retain conversation history. Meta also introduced “Side Chat with Meta AI,” enabling users to ask the AI for context‑specific help (e.g., restaurant suggestions) without exposing their private chats, and the feature will appear in the Meta AI app. While the system offers a privacy‑preserving way for billions of WhatsApp users to try AI, experts note that any cloud‑based secure solution still carries security trade‑offs and becomes a high‑value target for attackers.

#Writing discussion: Magic and "systems"

Lots of people, when they sit down to introduce magic into their story, think about it from a "system" point of view, implying things like rules, predictability, etc. But magic/the supernatural in our world is often very vibes based and unpredictable. Which does your story's "magic" lean towards? Do you think one works better than the other? In what situations and why?

Someone is promoting #Sidechat at my #university. Unsavoury online anecdotes about the app itself aside, unmanaged #anonymous writing walls within such a specific cohort only encourages incivility... Besides, what's the point in making more #campus-oriented #chat platforms? I'd say that since #educational institutions already offer emails, it does not hurt for them to run a chat service (be it #Matrix or #RocketChat) to promote formal (class, research, events...) usage.

welp, half of my students' response papers this week were about the app #Sidechat so I opened an account and am going to lurk.

Wild how the college anonymous posting site never truly goes away, just gets reincarnated...
