@_elena That was interesting! I like how they presented setting up a Mastodon instance as "starting their own social media platform". I suppose that is what they did, in a way.

Also interesting that they suggest the Fediverse's goals are old-fashioned, in wanting to go back to social media the way it was ten, fifteen years ago. Also a fair assessment... But what would be a non-evil way of making something new that appeals to younger people, then?

@cazabon check out the podcasts Search Engine and Hard Fork. The hosts are friends/nerds and just did episodes about federated social media and they made the #forkiverse for listeners that wanted a wading pool to get their threads/X/Facebook/tiktok hating toes wet with Mastoverse juice #searchenginepodcast #hardfork
I really need a diagram (or a coach) to understand this #fediverse but I am grateful for the discovery through #SearchEnginePodcast and the #forkiverse dimension and their creators @kevin @pj @Casey
(Pfiew… took me half an hour to write this… is this what having a baby feel like?)
@pj Pulled up theforkiverse.com in the kitchen while listening via incognito mode. Thanks for following through on fediverse reporting—fun episode, well explained. A followup might cover all the other fedi app types. You could even stream an episode recording session on Owncast (what’s the worst that could happen? :-) Enjoy your no-algo feed.

It's fun listening to @pj on Search Engine Podcast talk about the Fediverse. Interesting take that they think it's partly driven by nostalgia, but that it is something the world needs right now.
"For the Fediverse to take off it's going to have to feel new and obviously better than what came along before."

They do have a point about that but I'm happy with my experience here.

@Casey Ok, RT’ed. nine. months. later. Welcome to mastodon, where the past, present, and future combine.

Kind of amazing that my home instance had no problem linking to your new(?) one and letting me follow you guys. Like the old Internet, you didn’t have to get anyone’s permission, you’re just part of it.

Enjoyed the SearchEngine episode - thanks for trying this out.

Podcast recommendation:

Have you checked out #NoSuchThing yet? It's pretty great—a #podcast where three best friends and journalists answer their dumb questions by doing the research. (You may also remember them from when they guest-hosted the chicken bones episode of #SearchEnginePodcast).

Anyhow, this week's question is "Are surburban dogs happier than city dogs?" Check it out!

Are surburban dogs happier than city dogs?

Plus, are dogs racist? And all our other dog questions answered.

NO SUCH THING

WOW! The 2-part #podcast finale for #SearchEngine, season 1 is such great storytelling! Fantastic editing, research, sound design, and especially recommended if you dig #techno music. Go listen.

The Search Engine podcast dives into the "media apocalypse".

Traditional news outlets are in crisis, and finding trustworthy information is harder than ever. In what way can we support the informational commons?

"What we give our time, attention and money to; is what thrives. And what doesn't/get it; dies."

"A lot of this is happening to us, but its gonna keep happening to us if we all keep acting like it keeps happening to us." It is time to take an active role in where and how we consume media.

Join Ezra Klein and PJ Vogt as they explore the changing media world and how we, as consumers, can navigate it.

How do we survive the media apocalypse?

Listen to this episode from Search Engine on Spotify. Something strange, new, and unsettling is happening in media right now. We’re joined this week again by Ezra Klein, who has an explanation for why this is happening, a prediction about where it’s going, and a prescription for what we all can do about it. Yet another fascinating #podcast episode where I am quite pleased with being a #vegetarian:

"...a question from a four-year-old tips us into an investigation of one of our most fundamental taboos: #cannibalism. With help from New Yorker #food critic Hannah Goldfield and writer Kelefa Sanneh."
