Welp. We just had a #SeagateExos #20TB die on us in a spectacular way.

It's not just dead. It's *really* dead. ZFS refused to actually replace it, and the drive wouldn't power on.

Luckily, I had a spare. So now it's resilvering and our 539 TB of used data is safe (assuming nothing else dies)

I'm in line for an #RMA because it was new in 2023. Of all the drives we've had in our video server, this is the... fourth I think to die since 2015.

off to RMA the bugger, then.

Well it turns out the #Seagate #Exos X14 12TB manufacturer recertified drive I bought was on its way to dying as it won't mount anymore and makes clicking noises after it spins up. It's fine, though, I have a warranty and it was just for testing. The S.M.A.R.T. values were pretty bad for at least one of the items despite saying it's fine so I'm not surprised.

#HardDrives #SeagateExos

Someone should invent a noisemaker that makes random #HardDrive sounds and what noise it makes is configurable based on a selected drive brand and type, so you could have it be #Seagate #Exos, WD Blue, #Maxtor, small laptop ones, 5.25-inch and larger ones, iPod- and Zune-sized ones, etc. This could be run on its own or connected to the hard drive indicator LED pins to make noise when a drive is accessed.
