🇺🇸 The common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) is a medium-sized diving duck found across northern Europe, Asia, and North America. Measuring 40 to 50 centimeters in length with a wingspan of up to 80 centimeters, it weighs between 600 grams and 1.3 kilograms. Males are striking with their glossy greenish-black head, bright yellow eyes, and the distinctive white oval patch in front of the bill. Females are more subdued in brown and gray tones but share the species’ characteristic golden eyes. Goldeneyes are powerful divers, feeding on aquatic invertebrates, small fish, and crustaceans. They nest in tree cavities near lakes and rivers, often reusing old woodpecker holes. In winter, many birds migrate south to ice-free waters, forming loose flocks along coasts and inland lakes.

🇩🇪 Die Schellente (Bucephala clangula) ist eine mittelgroße Tauchente, die in Nord- und Mitteleuropa, Asien und Nordamerika verbreitet ist. Sie wird 40 bis 50 Zentimeter lang, erreicht eine Flügelspannweite von bis zu 80 Zentimetern und wiegt meist zwischen 600 Gramm und 1,3 Kilogramm. Männchen sind unverwechselbar: mit ihrem schwarz-grün schimmernden Kopf, den leuchtend gelben Augen und dem weißen ovalen Fleck vor dem Schnabel. Weibchen sind braun-grau gefärbt, besitzen aber ebenfalls die typischen goldgelben Augen. Schellenten sind hervorragende Taucher und ernähren sich von Wasserinsekten, kleinen Fischen und Krebstieren. Sie brüten in Baumhöhlen nahe Gewässern, häufig in alten Spechthöhlen. Im Winter ziehen viele Vögel zu eisfreien Küsten und Seen und bilden dort lockere Trupps.

Weit weg, bei leichtem Nebel, irgendwo zwischen Schatten und Gegenlicht. Da waren sie endlich: Schellenten!
Bisher habe ich sie nur im Winter gesehen. Es soll zwar ein paar Brutvorkommen in Deutschland geben, aber in die #Leinemasch kommen sie wohl nur vereinzelt zum Überwintern. Natürlich halten sie auch immer etwas zu viel Abstand für ein scharfes Bild. Sie bleiben einfach etwas Besonderes.
