Following The River

The russet hillsides of autumn lie in sequence ahead, snaking the road. From under shadow, we look forward into sunshine.

Dropping down the road through Norðdalur in Strandabyggð, Westfjords of Iceland. On the right is Hátungur (526m) and on the left is Staðarfjall (344m).

Outwash

Meltwater from mighty Vatnajökull glacier has carried ground rock down through the mountains. Over time, this has been deposited in deltas where the river spreads and the current slows.

The result is these beautiful braided sandbanks, cut and recut by changing water volume, piled up in the quiet times and then swept away by jökulhlaup.

The Narrows
El Malpais National Monument, NM

So named as there was a narrow path for early travelers between the tall cliff and the hazardous lava fields of the Malpais. State highway 117 now follows this gap running north/south. Uncharacteristic overcast skies the day I passed through.
