The NRTA and the Saskatchewan First Act have the FSIN in the province threatening legal action.

The time for action against both Acts is now, say chiefs.

There was no consultation of the NRTA when the legislation put control of natural resources into the hands of the western provinces in 1930, and there was no consultation when the Sask. First Act asserted exclusive jurisdiction over resources in 2022.

Saskatchewan First Nations to strike back at Sask. First Act, NRTA with legal action

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) has put the governments of Saskatchewan and Canada on notice. In the next two weeks the organization plans to file a statement of claim in court to challenge the governments’ control over natural resources. “A battle is brewing,” said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron at a press conference on Aug. 29, and legal action has been a long time in coming. “Since treaties were signed, they have been impacted. They have been infringed on. They have been breached,” he said.

The Métis Nation-Saskatchewan and Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations are both threatening legal action now that the province has passed the Saskatchewan First Act.

Both the FSIN and MN-S called the government out for lack of consultation both before the bill was drafted and as the bill worked its way through the legislature.

Legal action against Saskatchewan First Act on the horizon

The Métis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) and Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) are both threatening legal action now that the province has passed the Saskatchewan First Act. This despite a last-minute amendment stating, "Nothing in the Act abrogates or derogates from the existing Aboriginal and treaty rights of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada that are recognized and affirmed by section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982."

#FirstNations leaders pan #SaskFirstAct, threaten legal action and blockades

"We have mandates from the chiefs in assembly to move forward legally [and] politically," #FederationofSovereignIndigenousNations Chief Bobby Cameron said Friday afternoon.

"We're about to the point where we're going to start blockading."

Cameron & dozens of other chiefs gathered in #Saskatoon Friday, as what they say was a public show of force and unity against the act.
