It's (here for a quarter still) St. Rupert's Day.

Saint Rupert, as a saint, is no one spectacular. A bishop, preaching to pagans, but reasonable enough to cut his evangelization journey short, just before entering realm of potential martyr-makers. Built a cathedral. (Re)created Salzburg in ruins of a Roman town.

And this was how I met him. Not in Salzburg even, but where boats from Salzburg used to come, bringing the eponymous Salz (salt) to Vienna. The good saint even had a barrel of salt tucked under his arm.

Close to Danube channel, just a tad from always busy and loud Schwedenplatz, the saint hides at the feet of church tower. Saint Rupert's church, Ruprechtskirche, said to be the oldest in Vienna, humble in comparison to the Gothic giant of Saint Stephen. Beautiful. My favourite place in all the stunning Vienna. I miss it.
