28/02/26: I attended an informational session on dry stone walling in Tramin, chatted with some like-minded people, picked up a few practical tips on dry stone walling and for building a the dry stone wall habitat.
I passed by this church on the way back.
The paving stones look a little too clean to me (no moss or green in the joints). Maybe someone used chemicals here too, as is unfortunately often the case for keeping the paving stones clean by "rounding up" or "touching down".
St. James’s Church in Kastelaz stands on the hill of the same name near Tramin. It is considered Tramin’s most famous work of art, a masterpiece from the Romanesque period. The church was first mentioned in its present form in 1214. The Romanesque fresco cycle inside is one of the oldest in the German-speaking world.

Early Christianity in Ancona: Santa Maria della Piazza

The Ancona Walking Tour includes a stop in front of the church of Santa Maria dell Piazza. Blind arcades shape the thirteenth-century façade. Its portal is a jewel of medieval carving, while the upper register was struck by an earthquake. The Romanesque interior welcomes us in its sober simplicity. Through glass panels in the floor, we glimpse early Christian mosaics rich in symbolism, a baptismal well, and remains of ancient walls and frescoes. Curious to learn more about our walking […]

It's (here for a quarter still) St. Rupert's Day.

Saint Rupert, as a saint, is no one spectacular. A bishop, preaching to pagans, but reasonable enough to cut his evangelization journey short, just before entering realm of potential martyr-makers. Built a cathedral. (Re)created Salzburg in ruins of a Roman town.

And this was how I met him. Not in Salzburg even, but where boats from Salzburg used to come, bringing the eponymous Salz (salt) to Vienna. The good saint even had a barrel of salt tucked under his arm.

Close to Danube channel, just a tad from always busy and loud Schwedenplatz, the saint hides at the feet of church tower. Saint Rupert's church, Ruprechtskirche, said to be the oldest in Vienna, humble in comparison to the Gothic giant of Saint Stephen. Beautiful. My favourite place in all the stunning Vienna. I miss it.

Oh. The Dictionnaire raisonné de l’architecture française du XIe au XVIe siècle by Viollet-le-Duc is on French wikisource. Although it is, sadly, in French, even automatic translation will do, if you read it just for pleasure. And then there are the illustrations, so should you ever go out of gargoyle ideas for your new Gothic cathedral, look no further.
