Microsoft loves you and wants to protect you. So every time you receive an email with a link in it, Microsoft Outlook helpfully rewrites it so that it goes through their "safelinks" system. Safelinks allow your administrator, or someone at Microsoft, to stop you visiting a link which is malicious or suspicious. Rather than going to example.com, your link now goes to safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=example.com. Hurrah! If you accidentally click on a naughty link you won't cause chaos…

Just out of curiosity: does anyone know how trackable M365 "safelinks" are?

By "safelinks" I mean the re-writing of URLs in emails by a link into Microsoft's security scanner. The link is very very long and, I suspect, can be traced back to the individual user clicking on the link.

I assume they do this so that they can find out who's email contains spam / phishing /etc. but, at the same time, if the link is safe they know who clicked on what, when…

Seems "wrong" from a privacy perspective.

Rant: First it was the obnoxious top-posting. Then it was sending non-standard TNEF winmail.dat files to external users by default. Now every link converts to a 500-character safe link, reducing signal-to-noise ratio dramatically. Put it together and it‘s maddening to get an email that says “Here’s a screenshot of what I’m getting. Not surprised to see #MicrosoftTeams being used as a method for delivering malware. Make sure you have #SafeLinks and #SafeAttachments enabled in your tenant to cover security beyond email. #phishing #Cybersecurity
